Obsession for Results

How to Set Fire to an Obsession for What Matters
by

Whether you agree with or even like these folks doesn’t matter; Brad Anderson – CEO of Best Buy, Jay Leno, former late night T.V. king and entertainer, and internet gazillionaire Mark Cuban all share a common trait; an obsession for results that matter.

“I’m looking for a cultural edge that regenerates, that allows you to always be dissatisfied and always reinventing.” says Brad Anderson.  Jay Leno said, “My attitude is, sooner or later, the other guy is going to have to eat, drink, go to the bathroom, or take a vacation, and that’s when I catch him,” and “It’s not who you know, it’s not how much money you have, it’s whether or not you have the guts to use it.” says Mark Cuban.

Like Jay Leno, I have discovered that I must have a desire to compete and to win if I want to achieve most anything worth while.  And when I combine that with an obsession for results that matter, it compels me to learn; to improve my skill-set, mind-setand action-set.

I can’t injectobsession into anyone, but, I can coachobsession into anyone.  Obsession, like many things which are not inborn, can be achieved buy a ‘decision’, but must then be ‘followed by action’.

Unfortunately, people don’t act and almost always operate by feelings.  Remember when Obi Wan told Luke Skywalker to ‘trust his feelings’? Actually the opposite is true. Trusting our feelings is what begets most of the misery in our lives, and which holds us back and keeps us from getting results that matter.

Being obsessed for results and results that matter is not a feeling, I repeat – it is a decisionfollowed by an action.  How to achieve successful results that matter is not a secret.  It is a factually known process.  Don’t worry, if you put your trust in this process, decide and then act, the feelings you want will follow.

An obsession to achieve results that matter must contain three key factors.

  • Know Your Strategy:Your 3 year old standing alone in the kitchen, looking up at the cookie jar, knows what he wants / the end game / the strategy.  What will your child do to get to that cookie jar?  Yes, anything.  When the innate skill-set of creative problem solving melds with the strategic desire to win, the rest is just tactics.  It’s the same for you as well.  When you know the objective and make a decision to make its attainment your obsession, you will stop at nothing.
  • Know Your Principles: If you are ever willing to cut the proverbial ‘corners’ for short term results, you won’t be a long term player.  Too many relate doing what’s right with not being competitive. Nothing could be further from the truth. If you have an obsession for results that matter, then how the results are reached, matter too.
  • Know Your Responsibility: “You are the way you are because that’s the way you want to be.  If you really wanted to be any different, you would be in the process of changing right now.” — Fred smith, founder of FedEx.

So, like Brad, Jay, Mark, Fred and the coaching clients I work with – if it matters, set fire to an obsession; you’ll find a way to learn what it takes in skill-set, mind-set and action-set.  If you don’t the results won’t matter.
