There aren’t very many people out there that have more hands-on experience with vintage Zenith Defy watches than Selch. With all of this week’s drops, I wanted to know what he thought about the latest news. So I asked him – and here’s what I found out.

And the selection last night was diverse, hype-riddled, icy, and awesome. The HODINKEE Slack channel was basically an open watch-spotting thread. We had so much fun chatting about it, that we couldn’t not share them with you. So please enjoy this round-up of watches (and celebrities) from last night’s Super Bowl. Oh, and congratulations to the Rams on an absolutely historic finish to the game – and to Robert Woods for rocking a Rolex Day-Date while holding the Lombardi Trophy.

After years of working my way up in the industry, I ended up in New York at a new restaurant, Del Posto. It was quintessential upscale Italian food, and I was this bright-eyed young guy who, unlike the rest of the staff, hadn’t been worn down by all the stress of the first few months after opening.

Swiss watch exports to China (-26.3 percent) and Hong Kong (-11.5 percent) were both heavily impacted by the large-scale COVID-19 lockdowns and restrictions that have continued to occur in Mainland China throughout the year, shuttering countless retail stores and distribution centers, and slowing international tourism by Chinese nationals.

Fast-moving chronographs, pilots’ watches, even heritage models – there are many things that Zenith does well. But until today, something has been missing from the modern catalog: a diver. Well, Zenith has fixed that by announcing the Defy Extreme Diver, and it’s not just your simple diver in aesthetic only. This one goes deep – 600 meters, in fact. That means it also has a helium escape valve.

It was one of the preeminent watches worn by American pilots in World War II, Wind says. “The case has a very Rolex feel in terms of the heft. I’m drawn to chronographs from the early 1940s in particular, and this one with the gray and black color scheme, I never plan to sell.” Wind acquired it from his friend Adam Golden of Menta Watches, and it had good provenance prior to Golden.

These new models include the SRPK29 (black), the SRPK31 (champagne), the SRPK33 (teal), and the SRPK35 (orange). All four are 38mm wide, 12.1mm thick, and 44.2mm lug to lug and come on steel bracelets, have drilled 20mm lugs, 100 meters of water resistance (with a passive crown), and a unidirectional elapsed time bezel.

The no-date Submariner is much more universally wearable. Admittedly, it doesn’t fit as gracefully as its pre-ceramic ancestors, but hey, we live in 2024, and we have to accept reality. I find it wears elegantly, even on my smallish 17.5cm wrist.

The Concept really represents freedom and the extremes, said Lucas Raggi, Development Director at Audemars Piguet, when I spoke to him on the subject last year. “We took it as an opportunity for exploration in terms of mechanisms, materials, ergonomics, while also being one of the first watches without a dial.”

The marketing manager of Kurono Tokyo describes the 34mm’s design language as originating from the Art Deco watches that were popular in the 1930s. Asaoka came up with finely specified color samples and iterated over rounds of prototyping sessions with the dial supplier in order to visualize the idea he had in his mind.

Moreover, openworked watches are generally speaking more difficult to read than not, and to make an illegible version of the Asymetrique would have gone very much against the inspiration of the original 1936 design, which among other things was intended to make for a more natural experience when reading the time.

The term “Nautical” in Nautical Twilight gives a clue as to what it means from an observational standpoint. For celestial navigation, one of the numbers you need is the elevation of a celestial body above the horizon, particularly well-known reference stars. Nautical Twilight is the period during which it starts to get dark enough that such stars begin to become visible in the sky, but also during which there is still enough residual light in the sky for the horizon line to be visible.

While the Bamford collab presents its own look and feel for the S500, it does so without apology. It’s a fun, unique, brash, and decidedly spicy take on a known design. In other words, it’s a Bremont that is also very much a Bamford.

After World War II, acrylic crystals became the standard for the watch industry. Vintage Rolex, Patek, Seiko, and pretty much everything in between used plexiglass. Nowadays, this is even seen as part of the charm of these old watches.

The formulation of this idea was brewing over the last decade. But I would nail it down by saying that this exhibition was really percolating in the mind in the last couple of years. When COVID hit, it was a real push to put this into play. I think it was necessary for us to explore different platforms. We have the platform of bricks and mortar, which we are very accustomed to, and yet we wanted to take advantage of what technology could do in this situation.

The discovery of this reclusive rainbow toad caused quite a stir, and not only among herpetologists. It also inspired the designers at G-Shock to create the Frogman Borneo Rainbow Toad Limited Edition, a rare watch created to celebrate the rare amphibian.

Fans of Grand Seiko already know plenty about the company’s famous dials. Nailing the interface – what you spend the most time looking at and engaging with – has been one of the brand’s biggest differentiating factors throughout its history. Despite being sport watches, those luminous hands and markers have the diamond-polished goodness that we’ve all come to expect from Grand Seiko. Creating this kind of polished look on a sport watch dial is much harder than it looks.

While in Poland – like I did with the Moser Mega Cool – I shared the Legend Diver with the family, giving them a chance to see a watch they might not normally get to and showing them how it worked. My wife’s grandfather took a particular interest in it.

Westbrook has been known in the past to wear more traditional Rolex timepieces like the Day-Date and the Datejust. In fact, most players in the league opt for precious metals when it comes to the Crown. We almost never see the stalwart stainless steel sport watches except for Steph Curry and his Submariner, and King James with his OP 41 coral dial. Needless to say, it was a surprise to see this watch on Westbrooks’s wrist.
