The other two dials that were released in June are a bronze-cased option with a white dial with black text and vintage beige-toned lume (a $300 premium over the $595 stainless steel case) and a new white dial in the stainless steel case with green-hued lume. In all cases, the Super-LumiNova glows green. I haven’t heard from anyone that the color of the lume used makes a big difference in their buying decision, but as my title said, more options aren’t a bad thing. Or are they?

Earlier this morning, the fine folks at Monochrome announced their first-ever collaboration watch design and each and every piece in the series sold in a flash. Created in collaboration with the Austrian indie brand Habring², this new classically themed monopusher chronograph is based on Habring²’s Chrono-Felix model, and blends a steel 38.5mm case with a lovely two-tone salmon dial with blued steel chronograph accents.

As with so many things in watchmaking, the six-figure price tag and almost nonexistent availability of the Zenith Caliber 135 Observatoire Limited Edition is entirely secondary to what makes it so compelling and interesting in the first place. Oris doesn’t make a watch to honor just anyone, and Hollywood doesn’t make a blockbuster about the most ordinary, mundane folks, either. Luckily, legendary Navy diver Carl Brashear was an extraordinary gentleman, so it’s no surprise Oris created a limited edition watch in his honor. But the story doesn’t end there. With this watch, we can talk about more than just an updated dial color. The Metro, first unveiled at Baselworld in 2014, was conceived by Berlin-based industrial designer Mark Braun. It’s a model that also happens to have once been a HODINKEE limited edition. Needless to say, the model has some modern history behind it.

Before we nerd out on METAS certification and what it all means for Tudor, let’s look at the other updates to the burgundy Black Bay. First, it’s 0.8mm thinner than the previous generation: it now measures 13.6mm thick. As an avowed and small-wristed Black Bay 58 guy, this makes the burgundy Black Bay downright wearable, even for my smallish wrist.

The final Audemars Piguet rainbow on the list, and my personal rainbow watch of the year, is the Carolina Bucci 34mm Black Ceramic Rainbow Dial. At first glance, the dial appears black, but on closer inspection it reveals a reflective multi-colored spectrum tapisserie effect in the light. The combination of black ceramic and subtle rainbow on a 34mm watch is heaven to me.

Until now, the traditional El Primero has always featured a creamy white dial with its recognizable tricolor subdials. Here, Zenith has reinterpreted this tricolor with a black dial and also inverted the chronograph scales, and changed the date wheel to black.

Farer tends to operate at a price point that is a step up from many other microbrands, with the Eldridge costing a hair under two grand. Since 2015 the Legacy Machine Perpetual has been released in white gold, red gold, platinum and titanium (all in a series of 25 watches except for the titanium model, which is a series of 50) and it was awarded the prize for Best Calendar Watch at the 2016 edition of the GPHG. This is the first time (and probably the last) that the 581-component movement has been placed in a yellow gold case, which has been matched with a deep blue dial.

This is an intense, and at times, harrowing story; though fortunately, both men survived Vietnam and went on to make lives for themselves back home. While certainly worse for wear, this Tudor Submariner ref. 7928 – twisted and broken – also has a life beyond Vietnam, as a totem of their bond, and a catalyst for their reunion, 50 years on.

The first and most classic reference of the IWC Porsche Design Compass, 3510, was released in 1978, in both black and “NATO olive” green. The black reference 3510 is the most common by far but it’s unclear the ratio or the total number of production.

GM: In a way, yes. We find ourselves defined as a “minimal” watch company. It’s flattering, so I’m happy about this, but it’s more of a side effect of the design. It’s a result, but it’s not the goal; it’s minimal because it’s a tool.

Wind has a “Neat Fonts” meters first reference 5512 in his collection, as seen in Reference Points on the Rolex Submariner. But more recently, the Submariner he wears most is this Tudor Submariner, which is called a hybrid model. “It was the basis for the Black Bay Fifty-Eight,” Wind observes, “in that it has more of a traditional Submariner dial with circular lume plots and rectangular lume plots and a Snowflake hand.”

Spaceflight aficionados await the 50th anniversary Apollo 13 Speedmaster due in April 2020 but close friends of mine dream of a “classic” Speedmaster with a 60-minute bezel as worn by several astronauts, such as Apollo montre jowissa 15 Alfred Worden who preferred a 60-minute bezel as the Tachymetre scale bezel was considered useless in space.

This Philippe Dufour Simplicity was offered to Todd, and luckily, it was exactly the model he wanted – the swiss alpine military 37mm case, in platinum, with the guilloche dial. Sure, all Simplicities are incredible, but for Todd, the larger case size (the alternative is 34mm), the more contemporary look of the white metal (as opposed to rose gold), and the detailed, modern dial (instead of the more traditional lacquered dial with Breguet hands) make this one a winner.
